Within the school of Medicine, Neurology is an independent department located on the 1st floor of the Medical Sciences building. In a changing healthcare environment, we offer comprehensive clinical care to patients with different neurological problems. Apart from general neurology, the faculty has special interest and expertise in epilepsy, sleep disorders, clinical neurophysiology, neuromuscular diseases, stroke/cerebrovascular diseases, movement disorders and multiple sclerosis. In addition, there are several faculty members with expertise in various subspecialty areas (e.g. Neuropsychiatry, Neuro-ophthalmology, Neuropathology, Neuro-rehab, Pain Medicine etc.) and joint appointments in Neurology. State of art Clinical Neurophysiology labs and fully accredited Sleep Disorders Center are key component of the program.

We have a fully accredited residency program in Adult Neurology and we also offer a position for a Sleep Medicine fellowship. The training opportunities are provided at the University of Missouri Hospital and Clinics and at the Harry S Truman VA Medical Center. We also provide education to medical students, rotating residents and fellows from other areas including Neurosurgery, Psychiatry and Pulmonary medicine.

Message from the Chiefs

Dear Prospective Applicant,

Welcome to MU Neurology. Dept of Neurology takes pride in its educational endeavors to produce the finest academic and clinical neurologists. The vast resources found at the University hospital and affiliate hospitals permits every resident to gain the well-rounded experience necessary to become a strong clinician. The complexity & variety of cases, along with growing research opportunities allow each of our residents to go well beyond the requirements of the ABPN. While every year, several residents go on to pursue fellowships in Neurophysiology, Sleep Medicine, Stroke, Neurocritical care, Movement Disorders, and Multiple Sclerosis, many join academic setting's or private practice groups across the nation, carrying with them the great Mizzou Tradition.

Residents currently rotate mainly at two hospitals, an academic University Medical Center and its affiliates (Columbia Regional & Children's Hospital, Rusk Rehabilitation Institute), and the adjoining VA hospital, We also provide consult service to Mid MO Mental health Center. Each institution has a different array of cases to offer. University hospital being the only tertiary hospital in surrounding 150 miles in Mid- Missouri, gets a wide variety of referrals, VA gives us a tremendous experience in Neurodegenerative disorders and Geriatric neurology, Columbia Regional Hospital provides exposure to Pediatric Neurology and Obstetrics' & Gynecology cases, Mid MO Mental Health Center for Neuropsychiatry, and Rusk Rehab for Neurorehabilitation. Nevertheless, opportunities continue to expand, and we now have an option to rotate through Pain management, Sub Specialty Clinics like Multiple sclerosis, Headache, MDA, Movement Disorders.

Our department has been expanding - both number of faculty and residents. Our faculty includes a diverse mixture of attending physicians with all having a sub-specialty focus along with clinical research. The size of our program lends itself to individualized attention. During most rotations, residents are one-on-one with faculty members, facilitating informal lectures and bedside teaching in addition to the regularly scheduled conferences and grand rounds. The program’s emphasis is resident education. Also resident’s continuity clinic provides valuable experience in both long-term follow-up of patients, new patient referrals, and the practical aspects of efficient clinical practice. Every resident will be assigned a faculty mentor to guide them through out residency. The neurology department also supports attendance at national conferences and encourages environment for academic activity. Another good feature of the program is the integrated nature of preliminary medicine which helps maintain continuity and stability for the next four years of residency.

About the city of Columbia - it is a historic University town filled with young people. The way we like to put it: Small city with a big heart. Life here is enjoyable .The city offers a lot to those who seek life beyond work from theatre, jazz nights to basketball to football games (home of Mizzou Tigers); from museums to marvelous underground caves within a short distance, and a very happening downtown . Columbia has low cost of living and is one of the best places to raise your family. Many residents live close to university within 10 min drive time and own homes or apartments.

To sum up, completing a Neurology residency here at the University of Missouri- Columbia lays residents foundation for successful career to pursue academics or private practice or to continue fellowship training. Please take some time to browse our newly redesigned website and learn more about our excellent training program. Of course the only way to truly judge our program and Columbia is to come see it for yourself, and we hope you will.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like more information about our program.

Best wishes,

Krishna Mettu, MD, MS & Faisal Raja, MD
